I'm Jake, a native Phoenician, and the founder of The Sonoran Standard - a native seed and wildlife habitat business based in Apache Junction, Arizona.
My path here started long before I ever labeled a seed packet. I earned my BS in Environmental Resource Management, with a focus in Wildlife Management and Environmental Law, graduating Summa Cum Laude, along with a certificate in Wildlife Management. From there, I went to work doing what I loved most: hands-on wildlife work with the Arizona Game and Fish Department and a nonprofit wildlife organization, spending my days in the field working directly with the landscapes and species that make this state what it is.
Then everything changed. I contracted neuroinvasive West Nile virus, and the aftermath forced me to medically retire from fieldwork - the career I'd spent years building toward. It was a hard turn I didn't choose. But it also left me asking a different question: if I couldn't be out in the field the way I used to be, how could I stay connected to the work that mattered to me?
The Sonoran Standard is my answer.
We build everything we make around one goal: making it easier for people to bring real, functioning Sonoran Desert habitat into their own yards and properties.
That means we keep our seed offerings focused and honest; we grow our business around native seed and native seed mixes only, sourced and curated with the same standards I'd apply to a restoration project in the field. No filler, no non-native shortcuts. Just species that actually belong here and actually support the birds, pollinators, and wildlife that call the Sonoran Desert home.
It's also why we build our bird boxes the way we do. We make the only bird boxes crafted from beetle-killed pine that are both eco-friendly and genuinely beautiful - giving reclaimed, otherwise-wasted timber a second life as habitat, without sacrificing the design and care that make a box something you're proud to hang in your own backyard. Every box is built around species-specific dimensions, because a bird box that just looks nice isn't the same as one that actually gets used.
This isn't a pivot away from wildlife work, it's a continuation of it, just built differently. Every seed mix and every nest box we sell is a small piece of habitat restoration, put directly into the hands of the people living here in the Phoenix area and beyond. I can't do the fieldwork I once did, but I can still do the work of making the desert a little wilder, one yard at a time.
