Mexican Hat

Scientific Name: Ratibida columnifera
Bloom Period: Late spring through fall; yellow, red, or red-and-yellow bicolor
Mature Height: 18–36 in | Mature Spread: 12–18 in

Planting

  • When: Direct sow in fall in low-desert zones; as early as soil can be worked in higher elevations
  • Where: Full sun to partial shade; grows in rocky native soil or well-drained fertile soil alike
  • How: Loosen the soil surface with a rake or garden fork. Broadcast seed, mixing it with sand to help distribute evenly, then rake in lightly and press the soil to keep seed from washing away. Water immediately after sowing, then every 2-3 days until seeds germinate.

Growing Tips

  • One of the easiest wildflowers to grow - no special care required
  • Skip supplemental fertilizer; lean soil keeps stems sturdy and blooms coming
  • Reseeds freely and often naturalizes into charming, unplanned drifts
  • Short-lived perennial (typically 2–3 years), but self-sowing keeps a patch going strong

Care

  • No pruning needed, though deadheading extends the bloom season
  • Not susceptible to pests or disease

Safety

  • Toxicity: Not known to be toxic to pets or humans if ingested; not listed on the ASPCA's toxic plant database. As with any plant material, discourage pets and kids from chewing on it to avoid mild digestive upset.
  • Pet Safe (Dogs): Generally safe if nibbled — no known irritants or toxins.

Packet contains 500mg of seeds
