Planting

• When: Direct sow in late fall, after the first hard frost but before the ground freezes — this mimics the plant's natural seed drop and stratification
• Where: Full sun to partial shade; adapts to rocky, sandy, or clay soil as long as it drains
• How: Surface sow, pressing seed lightly into the soil rather than burying it. Keep lightly moist until germination, which can take 20–45 days.

• Avoid rich, amended soil - it fuels foliage at the expense of flowers and encourages this plant's already-aggressive spread
• This is a vigorous spreader by both rhizome and reseeding - best planted where its spread is wanted or contained
