Planting

• When: Direct sow in fall (once soil temps drop below 50°F, typically mid-to-late November in low desert) for natural stratification, or in early spring
• Where: Full sun; tolerates poor, sandy, or gravelly soil as long as it drains well
• How: Sow seed at a depth of about ⅛ inch and lightly rake in. Keep evenly moist until germination, which takes 15–45 days depending on soil temperature - warm soil (70–75°F) speeds things up considerably.
• Can be planted during monsoon season; wait until after first or second rain. Water every other day until sprouted and thereafter until temperatures cool off.

Growing Tips

• Unlike its perennial cousin G. aristata, firewheel is an annual (occasionally short-lived perennial) - it relies on reseeding to persist, so let some flower heads go to seed each season
• Establishes a healthy taproot before winter frost when fall-sown, giving it a head start on spring growth
• Extremely heat- and drought-tolerant once established; avoid overwatering, which invites root rot

Care

• Deadhead spent blooms to keep the plant flowering continuously through the season
• Naturally deer- and browse-resistant
• Not susceptible to significant pests or disease

Safety

• Toxicity: Generally considered non-toxic to dogs, cats, and horses
• Pet Safe (Dogs): Yes - same genus and profile as other Gaillardia species; hairy foliage may cause mild skin irritation on contact but isn't a systemic risk if nibbled
