Desert Bluebell

Scientific Name: Phacelia campanularia

Bloom Period: Spring; indigo-blue
Mature Height: 6–12 in | Mature Spread: 6–15 in

Planting

  • When: Direct sow in fall in low-desert zones; as early as soil can be worked in higher elevations
  • Where: Full sun to partial shade; grows in rocky native soil or well-drained fertile soil alike
  • How: Loosen the soil surface with a rake or garden fork. Broadcast seed, mixing it with sand to help distribute evenly, then rake in lightly and press the soil to keep seed from washing away. Water immediately after sowing, then every 2–3 days until seeds germinate.

Growing Tips

  • One of the easiest wildflowers to grow - no special care required
  • Skip supplemental fertilizer; it encourages excess leaf growth instead of blooms
  • Reseeds freely, especially in rocky soil, and often shows up in charming, unplanned spots

Care

  • No pruning needed, though deadheading keeps plants tidy
  • Not susceptible to pests or disease

Safety

  • Toxicity: Not known to be toxic to pets or humans if ingested, though the glandular hairs and sap can cause contact skin irritation (a mild dermatitis) in people and animals Pet Safe (Dogs): Generally safe if nibbled, but the same irritating hairs can bother a curious dog's nose or paws on contact.
